In short
- From 6 April 2027, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to sole traders and landlords whose qualifying income was over £30,000 in the 2025 to 2026 tax year.
- Qualifying income is your turnover before expenses, not your profit. Wages from a job, pensions and dividends do not count.
- You keep digital records, send HMRC a summary every quarter with compatible software, and still file a tax return by 31 January.
