Brick & block calculator
Bricks or blocks for a wall, less the doors and windows, and the mortar to lay them.
Job sheet
Brick & block calculator- Bricks needed
- 630 bricks
- 10.00 m² at 60 a m² + 5% wastage
- Mortar
- 0.30 m³
- about 0.03 m³ a m²
- Cement (1:4)
- 5 bags
- 25 kg bags
- Building sand
- 0.51 t
- or 21 bags of 25 kg
How it works
Work out the face of the wall, multiply by the bricks or blocks a m², and add the wastage.
- Area: length × height, less the openings.
- Bricks: a UK standard brick is 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm. With 10 mm joints it takes up 225 × 75 mm of wall, so 59.3 bricks a m², which the trade rounds to 60 (single skin) or 120 (double skin).
- Blocks: 440 × 215 mm, so 450 × 225 mm with the joints: 9.9 a m², called 10.
- Mortar: about 0.03 m³ a m² of single-skin brickwork (roughly 0.5 m³ per 1,000 bricks, frogs and droppings included), 0.01 m³ a m² of 100 mm blockwork. Dry materials take about a third more room than the mortar they make (× 1.33), split by the mix.
A worked example
A 5 m wall, 2 m high, single skin: 5 × 2 = 10 m², × 60 = 600 bricks, + 5% = 630 bricks.
Mortar: 10 × 0.03 = 0.30 m³. At 1:4, 0.30 × 1.33 = 0.399 m³ of dry materials: one part in 5 is cement, about 115 kg (5 bags of 25 kg), and the rest building sand, about 0.51 t.
The weights assume cement at about 1,440 kg/m³ and building sand at 1,600 kg/m³. These are estimates: for structural walls, follow the drawings.
Questions
How many bricks are in a square metre?
About 60 for a single-skin (half-brick, 102.5 mm) wall of UK standard bricks (215 × 102.5 × 65 mm) with 10 mm joints, and 120 for a double-skin (one-brick, 215 mm) wall.
How many blocks are in a square metre?
Ten standard blocks (440 × 215 mm faces) with 10 mm joints. The thickness of the block (100 mm, 140 mm…) does not change the count, only the mortar.
How much mortar do I need for 1,000 bricks?
About 0.5 m³ for a single-skin wall: at 1:4, that is roughly 8 bags of cement (25 kg) and 0.85 t of building sand. Frogs laid up, wide joints and a messy board all use more.
How do I work out a cavity wall?
One leaf at a time: the outer leaf (bricks, single skin), then the inner leaf (blocks), each with its own openings. Wall ties are usually about 2.5 a m², at 900 mm across and 450 mm up.
What mortar mix should I use?
1:4 or 1:5 (cement to building sand, by volume, with plasticiser) is common for general brickwork above ground. Below the damp-proof course, for copings and for structural work, follow the specification or ask building control.
