How it works

Work out the surface, multiply by the coats, and divide by what a litre covers.

  • Walls: 2 × (length + width) × height, less about 1.6 m² for each door and 1.5 m² for each window.
  • Ceiling: length × width.
  • Litres: area × coats ÷ coverage (m² per litre, printed on the tin).

A worked example

A 4 × 3.5 m bedroom, 2.4 m high, with a door and a window: 2 × (4 + 3.5) × 2.4 = 36.0 m², less 1.6 and 1.5 m², leaves 32.9 m² of wall.

Two coats at 12 m² a litre: 32.9 × 2 ÷ 12 = 5.5 litres. Tins come in 2.5 L, 5 L and 10 L, so that is 1 × 5 L and 1 × 2.5 L.

Results are estimates: rough walls, deep colours and a heavy hand all use more. If the numbers are close to a tin size, buy the bigger tin.

Questions

How much paint do I need for a room?

A 4 × 3.5 m room with 2.4 m ceilings, a door and a window has about 32.9 m² of wall. Two coats at 12 m² a litre is about 5.5 litres: a 5 L and a 2.5 L tin.

How many coats of paint do walls need?

Two for most walls, the same colour or a similar one. Three over a strong or dark colour, and a mist coat first on new plaster.

What does coverage on a tin mean?

The square metres one litre covers in one coat, on a smooth, sound surface. Emulsion is often 10 to 14 m² a litre. Rough or porous surfaces, like bare plaster, render or brick, take more paint: lower the figure.

How many litres are in a gallon?

A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres; a US gallon is 3.785 litres. Paint in the UK and Ireland is sold in litres, so the calculator works in litres and shows both gallons too.

Should I include the ceiling?

Tick it if the ceiling takes the same paint as the walls. Ceilings are often a different white: then work the walls out first, and the ceiling separately with the area option (length × width of the room).
